Dear Parents and Guardians,
Studies show that students’ reading and critical reasoning abilities frequently slide during the summer from their peak during school to their lowest while out of school. In an effort to prevent this ‘summer slide’, the Language Arts Department has implemented required summer reading for all of Ransom Middle School’s students.
As a result, all incoming 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are required to read the following novels selected for their grade level over the summer in preparation for the 2012-13 school year.
6th Grade The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe – C.S. Lewis
7th Grade Walk Two Moons – Sharon Creech
8th Grade The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – Mark Twain
A comprehensive test that focuses on the student’s understanding of basic literature terms and comprehension of the novel will be given the week after Labor Day (September 3, 2012) in your child’s Language Arts class.
The novels can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million or on Amazon.com. We suggest that the novel be purchased as soon as possible, so your child has the summer to read it.
In addition to the required reading, we also strongly encourage you to be an integral part of your child’s summer reading experience by visiting your local library or bookstore and choosing and reading another book together. Participating in a shared reading experience will make your child’s transition from vacation to school that much easier.
